Inherited from Classical Malay lindung, from Proto-Malayic *linduŋ, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *liduŋ, from Proto-Austronesian *liduŋ (shelter, cover, protection; shade).[1]

Borrowed from Balinese ᬮᬶᬦ᭄ᬤᬸᬂ (lindung, swamp eel),[2] ultimately from Proto-Austroasiatic *ʔnduŋ, *[l]nduŋ ("eel") through one of its descendants.[3]
