Etymology

From Old Danish leffnæ, Old Norse lifna (to remain), from Proto-Germanic *lifnōną, cognate with Swedish lämna (to leave), Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌻𐌹𐍆𐌽𐌰𐌽 (aflifnan, to remain). The verb is an inchoative of *lībaną (to stay) (cf. also *libjaną (to live)).
