Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *laiša, close to the Balto-Slavic word for 'foliage'. Compare Lithuanian laĩškos (leaf), Latvian laĩska (leaf on a linen stalk; stalk), Proto-Slavic *lȋstъ (leaf).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *(u)laś-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (wool). Cognate to Latin vellus (wool, fleece, skin).[2]
