Borrowed from Early Modern Spanish la güerta (the orchard), an obsolete variant of la huerta, with a stress shift due to having a closed penultimate syllable. Compare lakwatsa, lamesa, lamesita, lamyerda, and lauya. Doublet of lagwerta.
