[edit]From Middle High German lūten (“to sound, ring”), from Old High German hlūtēn, from Proto-West Germanic *hlūdēn. Equivalent to Laut + -en. Cognate with Dutch luiden. The general sense was absorbed in Modern German by läuten, originally the factitive of lauten.
