From Greek λαοκρατία (laokratía), from Ancient Greek λαός (laós, people) and Ancient Greek -κρατία (-kratía, power), in contrast to democracy, which is derived from Ancient Greek δῆμος (dêmos, common people”, “assembly of the people).
