[edit]From obsolete lak (“sin”) or possibly from obsolete lakik (“to atone, suffer punishment”) + -ol (verb-forming suffix) (both unrelated to lak and lakik, respectively, still in use).[1]

- (intransitive, literary) to suffer, pay, be punished, atone, expiate, optionally for something (such as a sin, with -ért), by something (such as a punishment, with -val/-vel)
- Synonym: bűnhődik
- halállal lakolt tettéért ― he was put to death for what he had done (literally, “he was punished by death for his deed”)
Usage notes
[edit]This form also occurs when a verbal prefix is separated from the verb:
- lakol (…) meg, meg … lakol ― meglakol
