Etymology 1

From obsolete lak (sin) or possibly from obsolete lakik (to atone, suffer punishment) +‎ -ol (verb-forming suffix) (both unrelated to lak and lakik, respectively, still in use).[1]

  1. (intransitive, literary) to suffer, pay, be punished, atone, expiate, optionally for something (such as a sin, with -ért), by something (such as a punishment, with -val/-vel)
    Synonym: bűnhődik
    halállal lakolt tettéérthe was put to death for what he had done (literally, “he was punished by death for his deed”)
