Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish لاؤطه (lauta) (cf. also Greek λαούτο (laoúto)), ultimately from Arabic العُود (al-ʕūd). Cf. also Serbo-Croatian lauta, Albanian llautë, lavut, Albanian lahutë, German Laute, Spanish laúd, Portuguese alaúde.
