[edit]From Middle High German lemen, lemmen, from Old High German lemmen, from Proto-Germanic *lamjaną, derived from *lamaz (“lame”), whence German lahm (“lame”). The simplification of the geminate and subsequent lengthening of the vowel by analogy with this underlying adjective.
