[edit]Etymology
[edit]According to Derksen, probably from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂wp- (“heap, mound”), for which see kaũpas (“heap”) for more. Another theory by Kortlandt derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (“to seize, grab”), for which he compares Ancient Greek κώπη (kṓpē, “handle (of an oar, etc.)”).[1]
