  1. to develop a pattern of fine cracks or fissures; to (slowly) break up into many distinct, but similar pieces
  2. (also figuratively) to (start to) display cracks and fissures in an originally smooth and polished surface; to begin to display the truth hidden under layers of artificial perfection
