[edit]Alteration of kroat (“Croat”) in the 17th century, under German influence. According to SO and SAOB (see #References), the military forces known as Croats had a reputation for wild behavior during the Thirty Years' War, where they fought on the Catholic side against Sweden. Doublet of kravatt.
