[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *krū̆t- (“protuberance, breast, belly”), probably related to *krew- (“curve”), *(s)ker- (“to turn”), *(s)krew-. Possibly related to Old Irish crott (“lute”), Proto-Germanic *hraukaz (“pile, stack”), but these connections are uncertain.[1]

[edit]According to Derksen, from the zero-grade of Lithuanian kráuti (“to pile”). Cognate with Latvian krūts (“hill, heap, breast”).[1]
