     Maar wat betekent dit? betekent het misſchien zo veel als: ik moet dit land, deszelfs Staatsgeſteldheid, en inwoonders, voor beter, dan anderen houden; ik moet alle andere natien als vijanden behandelen of ten minſten veragten? mij dunkt, zulke dwaasheden wederleggen zig zelven; want men begrijpt ligtlijk, dat het patriotismus het kosmopolitismus d. i. de algemeene en alles in zig bevattende menſchenliefde, welke Jezus ons bevoolen heeft, en uit hoofde van welke wij alle menſchen onder alle lugtſtreeken, als broederen en kinderen van onzen hemelſchen Vader moeten hoogagten, — beminnen en hun welvaart wenſchen en bevorderen, volſtrekt niet benadeelen moet.

     But what does this mean? Does it perhaps mean as much as: I must hold this country, the national condition and the inhabitants of the same, as better than others; I must treat all other nations as enemies or at the least despise them? Methinks that such follies refute themselves; for it is easily understood, that patriotism should not be detrimental at all to cosmopolitanism, that is the general and all-encompassing love of humanity, that Jesus has commanded of us, and by virtue of which we must esteem all people from all corners of the earth as brother and children of our heavenly Father, — love them and desire and promote their welfare.
