[edit]Etymology
[edit]Either:
- from Proto-Indo-European *kā́p-s ~ *káp-s-os, from *kap- (“to seize, hold”), suffixed with -shtë and ultimately a doublet of kap,
- or from Proto-Albanian *kāp-esta,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂po- (“land, garden”), cognate to Proto-Germanic *hōbō.[2][3]
In both cases it is also cognate to Ancient Greek κῆπος (kêpos).
