kompiainen

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Likely from Swedish konfekt. Compare Estonian kompvek, which went through similar phonological changes while borrowing from German Konfekt.

There is a common folk story and myth regarding the etymology of the word stating that the word is a misinterpretation of the French combien? (how much?) as meaning "candy", being stated by a French trader in the context of trading sweets.
