[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from Middle High German *knellen (as in Middle High German zerknellen (“to crumple, crush, shatter, squash”)), perhaps from Middle High German knellen (“to bang, burst”), whence archaic German knellen (“to bang, slam, pop”).
