Etymology

The same word as northern Moselle Franconian kneipe, Ripuarian kniepe (to blink), from the constant glances to the side. Ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *knīpan, probably through Middle Dutch knîpen. Cognate with Dutch knijpen, German kneifen and kniepen.
