From Proto-Khasian *kʰlaː, from Proto-Austroasiatic *kla(ː)ʔ (tiger). Cognate with Pnar khla, Bahnar kla, Khmer ខ្លា (khlaa), Pacoh cula, Mon ကၠ (klaˀ).
