From Proto-Albanian *karpā, from Proto-Indo-European *kerpéh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp- (to pluck). Compare Lithuanian kar̃pas (hack, notch), Swedish harv (harrow), Ancient Greek καρπός (karpós, fruit). See also the name of the Carpathians.
