[edit]From Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *kapuqa (“rain cloud”) from Proto-Polynesian *kapu (“mist”) (compare with Tongan kakapu (“fog, mist”))[1][2] from Proto-Oceanic *kaput (“mist”) (see Fijian kabu) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kabut (“mist”) (see Malay kabut (“fog”))[3]
