Usage notes

[edit]

The word has more senses than the English word "international". It is common for even Finns with good English skills to use "international" in ways that are considered incorrect or strange by English native speakers, for example in situations such as these:

Tässä ravintolassa vallitsee kansainvälinen ilmapiiri.
This restaurant has a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
ilmastolakkojen kansainväliset tavoitteet
the global goals of the climate strikes
Metalliteollisuutemme on kansainvälisellä tasolla.
Our metal industry is at an internationally competitive level.
(literally, “Our metal industry is at an international level.”)
