[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic канъдило (kanŭdilo), from Ancient Greek κανδήλη (kandḗlē), from Latin candela (“candle”).

- (chiefly Eastern Orthodoxy) A vigil lamp; a cresset, usually hanging and richly decorated, containing a floating wick fed by oil, which is placed before icons and altars.
- 1844, Ljudevit Gaj, Danica horvatska, slavonska i dalmatinska, volume 10, number 42:
- U jednom kutu visila je jednostavna bezuresna ikona, pred kojom je gorelo malo kandilo.
- In one corner hung a plain undecorated icon, before which burned a small vigil lamp.
