Etymology

From Middle Dutch cabelliau, from Old Dutch cabillau, possibly from Latin baculum (stick, staff), referring to the way cod were split and dried on wooden sticks. Or, with metathesis from/influenced by Basque bakailao (cod), Portuguese bacalhau (cod).
