[edit]From Proto-Finnic *karnëh, from Proto-Uralic *karne, see there for further etymology. Cognates include Finnish kaarne, Livonian kārnaz, Võro kaarna, kaarnas, kaarnõq, kaarnõh, Ingrian kaarne, Veps karniš (“crow”), Karelian koarneh, Livvi kuarneh; Northern Sami gáranas, Inari Sami káránâs, Skolt Sami käärnõs (from Proto-Samic *kārënës); Erzya кренч (kŕenč), Moksha кранч (kranč), Eastern Mari курныж (kurnyž), Udmurt кырныж (kyrnyž), Komi-Zyrian кырныш (kyrnyš), Tundra Nenets харна (xarna), харӈэˮ (xarŋeq), Mator [script needed] (karguj). Phonetically similar terms for corvids can be found in Indo-European languages, compare Latin corvus (“raven”), cornix (“crow”), Ancient Greek κορώνη (korṓnē, “crow”). Possibly onomatopoeic.
