Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قیورق (ḳıvrıḳ, curled, twisted),[1] from Ottoman Turkish قیورمق (ḳıvırmaḳ, to curl, to coil, to twist),[2] morphologically kıvır- +‎ -ık.
