[edit]Cognate with dialectal Dutch kuieren (“to chat”), of which it is uncertain whether it is the same word as kuieren (“to walk leisurely”). Ultimately perhaps an iterative form of Proto-Germanic *kweþaną (*kwiþirōną or the like). Compare also Dutch koeteren, German kaudern, both “speak unintelligibly, give birdcalls”, etc.
