Luxembourgish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German kunnen, from Old High German kunnan, from Proto-West Germanic *kunnan, from Proto-Germanic *kunnaną.
Cognate with German können, Dutch kunnen, English can, Icelandic kunna.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]kënnen (third-person singular present kann, preterite konnt, past participle konnt or kënnen or kéinten, past subjunctive kéint or kënnt, auxiliary verb hunn)
Usage notes
[edit]- The alternative past participles kéinten, kënnten are quite often used instead of an expected infinitive in perfect subjunctive constructions with another infinitive. Thus: Dat hätt ech kéinte maachen (“I could have done that.”) alongside more regular: Dat hätt ech kënne maachen.
