From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ḍẓʰaHpáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰ-eh₁ (to burn). Compare Sanskrit क्षापयति (kṣāpayati), Ashokan Prakrit 𑀛𑀸𑀧𑀬𑀺𑀢𑀯𑀺𑀬𑁂 (jhāpayitaviye, ought to be burnt, gerundive).
