Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ḍẓʰaHpáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰ-eh₁ (to burn). Compare Pali jhāpeti, Ashokan Prakrit 𑀛𑀸𑀧𑀬𑀺𑀢𑀯𑀺𑀬𑁂 (jhāpayitaviye, ought to be burnt, gerundive).

      विवाहां ज्ञातीन्त्सर्वान् अपि क्षापयति ब्रह्मगवी ब्रह्मज्यस्य क्षत्रियेणापुनर्दीयमाना ॥
      vivāhāṃ jñātīntsarvān api kṣāpayati brahmagavī brahmajyasya kṣatriyeṇāpunardīyamānā.
      If the Brāhman's cow, not restored by the Kshatriya [who stole it], it burns down the marriages and all the kinsmen of the Brāhman's oppressor.
