[edit]From jörð (“earth, ground”) + epli (“apple”). Possibly from Dutch aardappel (“earth apple; potato”) or German Erdapfel (“potato”), calques of the French pomme de terre (“an apple from the earth, a potato”). Compare Faroese jørðepli.
