Etymology

[edit]

Compound of jacht (haste) or jachten (to hurry) +‎ schip (ship). Perhaps a modification of Middle Dutch jageschip. Although jachtschip is attested later than jacht (yacht), it is often supposed to be the older form; for one, it explains the neuter gender of jacht.[1]

  • Hyphenation: jacht‧schip

Noun

[edit]

jachtschip n (plural jachtschepen, diminutive jachtscheepje n)

    Synonyms: jacht, jachtschuit

Derived terms
