Probably the instructive singular of obsolete ihta (“opportunity, chance”), from Proto-Finnic *ihta, possibly from Indo-Iranian.

Usage notes

• The same rule as with aivan applies, in that 'large' adjectives are never used with ihan. However, in practice, this rule is broken often in informal contexts (significantly more so than with aivan), although there is still some tendency to avoid such uses. Furthermore, with some positive adjectives and 'large' adjectives or adverbs, ihan may have a moderative meaning, which aivan can never have.
