[edit]A calque of Late Latin īnspīrātiō, coined in 1897 by Jānis Pliekšāns (Rainis) from iedvest (“to inspire”) + -ma (itself coined by J. Pliekšāns from ie- + dvest (“to breathe heavily”)).[1]
