[edit]From New Latin, from Ancient Greek ὑδρο- (hudro-), from ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”), + μήτρα (mḗtra, “uterus”), + κόλπος (kólpos, “any hollow space; womb”); essentially equivalent to a surface analysis of hydro- + metro- + colp- + -us.
