From New Latin, from Ancient Greek ὑδρο- (hudro-), from ὕδωρ (húdōr, water), + μήτρα (mḗtra, uterus), + κόλπος (kólpos, any hollow space; womb); essentially equivalent to a surface analysis of hydro- + metro- + colp- + -us.
