Etymology

Borrowed from Cantonese 漢字 / 汉字 (hon3 zi6, Han Chinese character), with possible influence from Hokkien 漢字 / 汉字 (hàn-jī, Han Chinese character), from Middle Chinese (xàn, Han dynasty; China) + (dzì, [written] character). Compare Mandarin 漢字 / 汉字 (hànzì), Japanese 漢字 (kanji), Korean 한자(漢字) (hanja). Doublet of hanja, hanzi and kanji.
