From holy (divine; godly, adjective) +‎ hand grenade (hand-thrown timed explosive, noun); an ellipsis of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, coined in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The popularity of holy hand grenades as video game items is largely attributed to the Worms series.
