From Proto-Cushitic, from Proto-Afroasiatic onomatopoeia. Compare Jiiddu hanjhisaal,[1] Daasanach andursh,[2] and Arbore hetturis. Cognates may include Hebrew התעטש (hit'atésh), and Hausa atishawa.
