[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حمایه (ḥimāye, “a protecting, defending, protection, defence”),[1][2] from Arabic حِمَايَة (ḥimāya, “protection”), verbal noun of حَمَى (ḥamā, “to protect, to shelter”).[3]
