[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حدت (hiddet, “sharpness of a cutting edge, acuteness, sharpness of temper, vigor, energy, strength or intellect, pungency, acridity of taste, anger, rage, fury”),[1][2] from Arabic حِدَّة (ḥidda), verbal noun of حَدَّ (ḥadda, “to sharpen, to limit, to confine, to define, to distinguish”).[3]
