[edit]From Old Swedish hedhnom hø̄s, heydhin hø̄s, equivalent to heden (“heathen”) + hös, where hös is of uncertain origin. Possibly related to Icelandic haus (“skull”), meaning burial mound or possibly funerary urn in this compound.
