Etymology

[edit]

hääyö (wedding night) +‎ aie (intention)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhæːˌyø̯ˌɑi̯.eˣ/, [ˈhæːˌyø̞̯ˌɑ̝i̯.e̞(ʔ)]
  • Rhymes: -ɑie
  • Hyphenation(key): hää‧yö‧aie

Noun

[edit]

hääyöaie

  1. plan for the wedding night

Usage notes

[edit]
  • This word is sometimes cited as the Finnish word that contains the largest number (7) of consecutive vowels, but there was little evidence of it ever being actually used as other than curiosity before the 2015 book Hääyöaie by Sophie Kinsella (→ISBN). Another artificial construction, riiuuyöaie, contains as many as nine consecutive vowels.
