From Chinese (MC gje, “to ride”). Cognate with Proto-Southwestern Tai *kʰwiːᴮ (to ride), whence Thai ขี่ (kìi), Lao ຂີ່ (khī), ᦃᦲᧈ (ẋii¹), Tai Dam ꪄꪲ꪿, Shan ၶီႇ (khìi), Ahom 𑜁𑜣 (khī).
