From Cantonese 鬼婆 (gwai² po⁴, “foreign woman”), literally "ghost woman".

Much like gweilo, gweipo has passed into the terminology of Caucasian residents of Hong Kong, losing its derogatory edge in the process. The distinction of it referring to an older rather than younger woman (as in Cantonese) is often not as pronounced in English usage.
