From Middle Welsh gwadu, from Proto-Brythonic *gwodad, from Proto-Celtic *wotāti, from Proto-Indo-European *woth₂-éye-ti [whence also Latin vetō (to forbid)[1]] from Proto-Indo-European *weth₂- (to say).
