From Old Galician-Portuguese golpella, from Latin vulpēcula (fox kit), diminutive of vulpēs (fox), from earlier volpēs, from Proto-Italic *wolpis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p- ~ *h₂ulp- ((red) fox). Cognate with Spanish vulpeja, Asturian vulpeya, Catalan volpell, Occitan volpìlh, Middle French goupil, Old Italian volpiglio.
