[edit]Inherited from Old Spanish vulpeja, golpeja, gulpeja, from Latin vulpēcula, diminutive of vulpēs, from earlier volpēs, from Proto-Italic *wolpis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p- ~ *h₂ulp- (“(red) fox”).
