[edit]From Proto-Germanic *gahabjaną, equivalent to gi- + hebbian (see etymology 1 of hebbian). Akin to Old English gehabban, Old High German gihabēn, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌽 (gahaban).
