From Proto-West Germanic *geldan, from Proto-Germanic *geldaną. Cognate with Old Frisian jelda, Old Saxon geldan, Old High German geltan, Old Norse gjalda, Gothic *𐌲𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*gildan).
