[edit]From Middle High German gebern, from Old High German giberan, from Proto-West Germanic *gaberan, from Proto-Germanic *gaberaną. Cognate with English bear.

[edit]- The 2nd and 3rd person singular forms of the present are traditionally du gebierst, sie gebiert. The regularised forms du gebärst, sie gebärt are equally common in practice.
